Su (pronounced as Soo) : this is the serial name determined by Jong's family.

The syllable "Su" is for the 71st descendents of the first Bhak (Park) who established Silla (aka Sara) Kingdom in 67 BC.   It means big water or river although it is not important as it was pre-defined by a branch of Bhak family (Our Bhak family branch, Gyujunggong, has an annual committee meeting where family representatives decide what syllables they are going to use for all the generations of Bhak).

Subio's father Jong's name is also a generic name for all the 70th generation of Bhak family.

However, not all the Bhak families follow this rule necessarily.

Bio: this means life in Greek (as in Biology).

Brief history of Subio's  father side.

Subio's 13th great grandfather was the prime minister of Josun dynasty of Korea. His second son (Bhak, Ja-Eung) settled in Chungchung province (Mokcheon). His descendents moved to ChungDo which is in the East side of Korean peninsula. This particular branch of Bhak family lived in Chungdo for long. Subio's grandfather moved to Busan and had one son, Jong and two daughters. Jong Bhak now lives in Suwon as a researcher.

Subio's male family line was traditionally scholastic. There were numberous scholars, administrators and politicians in the family line. Although there were many ancestors who passed the government exams, there have been relatively few active politicians. They were successful for about 1000 years (67 BC to 998 AD) in the Silla kingdom. When Silla peacefully handed over the sovereignty to Korea dynasty, they became nobles with titles (from royal family status).

They were successful in the newer kingdom producing various scholars. One of them was called the confusious of the East for his integrity and scholastic quality. His name was Bhak Hyun and Subio is in that branch. Bhak Hyun's family line continued to the next Korean kingdom called Josun.

In Josun dynasty, Subio's family was still successful with many scholars until Subio's 13th great ancestor who committed suicide out of a famous political upheal (Injo Banjung). He chose honour and principle at the time of regime change due to some royal family conflict. At that time, Subio's family was living in Seoul. The house his 12th ancestor was called it 'Eupbackdang' and used to be a famous house building in Seoul (it is explained in a Seoul city history book). You can visit the site where there is a stone monument is standing now.

Since then, they moved to avoid political turmoil to the south eastern part of Korea and lived quietly until Subio's grandfather Bhak, ChunGyu moved to Busan. Subio's grandfather was a ship engineer and did not go to university. He refused to go to any university believing that studying did not bring any benefits. The only thing his father was doing was studying. He also observed that educated communists in the town got shot dead as Korea was going anti-communist. His generation was perhaps one of least fortunate in Subio's lineage as his father died when he was 12 and he was not educated properly. His only little brother was an alcoholic and died young due to heavy drinking.

Subio's father Jong continued his family tradition of becoming a scholar and philosopher. Jong enjoyed studying.

Subio's father's mother did not get proper education due to sex discrimination that was common around that era in Korea. She however had a very scientific and logical ways of thinking. While Subio's grandfather is dexterous but not so rational (rather intuitive and artistic), Subio's grandmother is thoughtful and intellectual in her own way. A practical thinker, is she. These two very different personalities who would not usually go well together (compatible) as a couple unless they had been matchmaked. Jong thinks that unless they were matched, they would never have married due to different life styles.

Jong's grandfather was a philosopher and studied in Meiji university of Japan. He was forced to marry his wife in his late 20s and the marriage was a disaster. It ended when he died after suffering from a stroke at the age of 42.

Subio also means "go up" or "ascend" in Spanish.

There are around 4 million Bhaks in Korea now. Among many branches, Gyujung-gong (gong means lord in English) middle branch and Sukmin-gong middle branch where Subio belongs to is the most successful in terms of historical achievements. Also, perhaps one of the most dramatic in history. In Korean historical dramas and in a legend show, Subio's direct ancestors appear.
